Four signs it’s time to upgrade your home security system

There are some instances where technology that can be described as “retro” is a desirable thing; like in the case of record players and Polaroid cameras. However, there are other instances where owning “retro” technology is not something that you want; like in the case of home security systems.

After all, shouldn’t the technology that helps protect the things and people near and dear to you as well as one of your most expensive investments be the best it can be? It might be time for a technology update if your current system has any of the following items:

1. A connection to a landline

There are a few shortcomings when it comes to systems that rely solely on a landline connection to alert the authorities in the event of an emergency. One of them being that if someone wanted to disable your home’s security system, all they would have to do is cut the connection to the landline.

However, if you update your system to a more modern one that relies on a wireless cell signal and/or Internet connection, it no longer allows for communications to be severed from outside the home. Many customers often pair Internet connection (if available) and cell-signal as a back-up. It adds more protection for signals to be sent. In fact, systems like the ProSeries will alert the Monitoring Center even if the controller is broken or damaged during a break in.

2. Outdated monitoring technology

Cameras and sensors (like the ones for doors, windows, and rooms) are key components of many home security systems. In recent years, the technology advances for these components have been drastic. Internet connected home security cameras can now be securely viewed remotely. Sensors have lost their wires, making it less expensive and intrusive to install them in your home. A wireless system’s devices can also be moved much easier. You can move a sensor to a different room, or even to a different home if you move.

Why not take advantage of these advances and ditch your “retro” cameras and sensors?

3. Some difficulty integrating with other home systems

While your older system may be able to integrate with some of your home’s other systems, like your smoke detectors, it can be cumbersome and clunky. An updated system will have an more user friendly interface (many feature touchscreen keypads and access via mobile apps) and even more integration options.

They can be integrated with a variety of other sensors and systems to alert you of environmental factors like smoke, CO2, temperature and water leaks. They can also be integrated with home automation products, giving you more control than ever. Why not take advantage of these integrations and get the most from your home security system? Add another layer of protection and have peace of mind that the ones you love are protected.

4. A single keypad control

Is your older security system controlled by a single keypad located in a centralized location in your home (probably by the front door)? Does this keypad allow you to perform only the most basic functions, like arming and disarming the alarm?

And how many times have you forgotten to set the alarm before leaving the house and had to turn around to activate it? Or have gone to bed, gotten snug and cozy only to realize that you forgot to set the alarm?

Well, good news, you can update to a system that doesn’t limit you to controlling things from a single keypad, and instead allows you to control them from your smartphone or other strategically located keypads (systems like the ProSeries). Controlling your home security system will no longer be an inconvenience.
