Preventing false alarms

False AlarmsHave you set off your EPS Security alarm by mistake? It’s more common than you might think. In fact, false alarms are a big issue not only for EPS Security, but the industry as a whole because they can take up valuable resources at a time when they may be most needed. In addition, the issue can become costly for repeat offenders in some municipalities.

EPS is among a group of security professionals working towards the reduction of false alarm signals. There are three major areas where you can make an immediate impact:

1. The most common false alarm trips come from unlocked doors and windows, unsupervised pets, and open windows which can allow drafts to move household items in front of motion detectors. Before arming your system, make sure you properly secure all doors and windows.

2. Another primary cause of false alarms is the untrained user. EPS Security systems are designed to be intuitive to use, but dedicating just five minutes to proper arm/disarm training can make a world of difference for new users.

3. Finally, regular maintenance and testing reduces the likelihood of a false alarm. Central Station testing should be done monthly, and batteries should be replaced every three to five years.
