DIY home security systems: Security made difficult?

Do you have a DIY security system in your home? And by DIY, we mean a pre-packaged system that you went to the store to purchase and installed yourself, not a series of traps and alerts that look straight out of a Home Alone movie.

If so, how do you feel about the service and security that your DIY system provides you? If you are totally happy, then this might not be the post for you. But if you are less than thrilled, you might want to keep reading. If the things below have ever been points of frustration for you when it comes to your DIY security system, it might be time to make the switch to a different option:

1. The extreme simplicity.

Have you ever looked at your DIY security system and been underwhelmed by it’s very basic functionality that can’t be customized to meet your specific security needs? If you’ve ever wanted a system that can support more features and functions (like wireless sensors or video doorbells), consider a more robust system that offers more than simple, one size fits all security.

And for many DIY systems this lackluster simplicity can also be found in the design of the hardware. You’ve taken the time to decorate and add your own aesthetic to your home, and it can be frustrating to look around the room and see your system’s control panel that has little to no design aesthetic at all. Make the switch to an option that has a an appearance that you want to show off, not hide in a closet.

2. The inability to integrate with other home systems.

Do you have home automation tools like Amazon Echo, Google Home or a smart thermostat that you love? Wouldn’t it be great if they could integrate with your home security system? While your DIY home security system probably does not integrate with these home automation tools, you can easily make the switch to a system that can!

3. The poor customer service.

How would you rate the customer service that you’ve received when you’ve had to contact the manufacturer of your DIY system? We would be willing to bet that the service would receive a less than stellar rating. Many have limited hours each day when they accepted customer service calls and if you did happen to call during those hours, you probably had to sit on hold for a while before you were connected to a person.

4. The challenges that come with fixing the system.

Uninstall the unit, mail it to the manufacturer, have it verified as broken, and then wait for them to send you a new unit. All the while, your home is left unsecured and vulnerable for days or weeks (and no one wants that). Make the switch to an option where your system is serviced quickly, by professional technicians.
