Moving? Seven security suggestions for your new home.

Moving? Seven security suggestions for your new home.

The process of buying a new home is an exciting one. As a new homeowner, you’ve probably spent hours planning how you’ll decorate, where the furniture will go, what improvements you’ll make to the house and other more glamorous aspects of home-ownership.

But there are some slightly less glamorous, but possibly more important aspects that you have to consider as well, like home security. Don’t worry; we’ve got your back. Here are a few things that you can do make sure that your new home, as well as the people and things in it, are protected.

1. Change the locks.

Make sure that the only people who have access to your home are people that you want to have access to it, not the previous owners and anyone that they might have given a key to.

2. Install interior and exterior lights.

A well light home is a well-protected home, since most potential intruders prefer to work under cover of darkness, having proper lighting can help deter them. Make sure that the entrances to your home and any outbuildings, have both interior and exterior lights. Consider installing exterior lights that illuminate any large trees or shrubs close to your home, where a potential intruder could hide.

3. Add privacy film to doors and windows.

The number of windows that a home has can be one of its biggest assets, but they can also be one of its biggest weaknesses when it comes to security. If your new home has decorative glass on and around exterior doors or windows that can be seen into very easily from the road, sidewalk or a neighbor’s home, consider installing privacy film.

4. Inspect window locks.

Once you have the keys to your new home, do a quick walk through and take a look at your windows. Make sure that all of the windows lock properly; this is especially important for ground floor windows that would be easy for a potential intruder to climb in. If you find any windows that don’t like, get them repaired or replaced ASAP.

5. Install large, reflective numbers on your house and mailbox.

Having easy to read numbers makes it very easy for the authorities to identify your home in the event of an emergency. In situations where every second counts, you don’t want time to be wasted looking for your house number.

6. Get to know your neighbors.

Your neighbors can be one of your biggest assets when it comes to the security of your new home. They can provide extra sets of eyes looking out for your home when you’re not there (and even when you are). In tight-knit communities where people know and look out for each other, crime rates tend to be much lower. Why? Because if there are strangers about or if there is anything amiss, it’s much more noticeable.

7. Install or reactivate a security system.

One of the best ways to keep your new home safe and secure is by letting the professionals keep an eye on it for you. Every home is different, and so are the security needs of every homeowner. So whether you are installing a system for the very first time, or reactivating an existing system; it’s important to have a technician inspect your home and make recommendations about the best home security solutions.

If you have an old security system from EPS (or even another provider), reactivating it for use in your new home is a quick and easy process. Click the button below to learn more and get started today!
