What it means to be a Trusted Security Advisor

When protecting what matters most, having a Trusted Security Advisor can make all the difference. But what does it truly mean to be a “trusted advisor” in the world of security? At EPS Security, it goes beyond simply offering recommendations—it means combining security expertise with a commitment to your safety and peace of mind. Few people understand this better than Tony.

Before joining EPS Security, Tony developed training programs for the manufacturing sector and led high-stakes instructional efforts for the U.S. Army and NATO allies—specializing in adult learning and communication in complex environments. In 2021, he brought that expertise to EPS Security as a Technical Instructor, where he trained technicians on the intricacies of security systems and Michigan code. Now, as a Major Accounts Representative, Tony applies his knowledge directly with customers—helping them understand their systems and tailor solutions to their unique needs.

We sat down with Tony to gain insights from his extensive experience. Let’s dive in.

What does the Training Center bring to EPS Security for employees and customers?

I have never seen a company this size invest so much in its Training Program. As a company with around 250 employees, we can give each person direct personal attention. Technicians see right from the start of their career that the Training Center here at EPS Security is designed as a professional program. We are a registered Department of Labor apprenticeship program and have in-house certified trainers for our products. This allows us to have more techs trained for emergencies and service calls.   → Learn More About Our Technician Training

What’s something about professional security systems that most people often overlook?

That is a great question. From my sales perspective, potential clients don’t realize how integrated our systems can become. We frequently talk about intrusion systems monitoring other pieces of equipment, like HVAC, lighting, or sensitive inventory. We can allow you to see a live video feed based on environmental sensors, and we have apps that allow you to speak to the other person, unlock doors and gates, or send a request for help to our central station. This can become overwhelming quickly, but it doesn’t have to. We are here as Trusted Advisors to help.

From a trainer’s perspective, I have noticed that many of our new techs and customers are surprised at how ‘techy’ you need to be to utilize many features. As an industry, we are noticing technicians need to understand networking, database management, server integrations, and the constant updates of federal and state codes. As our world becomes more connected, EPS Security is keeping our technicians aware of network security requirements, ensuring that we remain Responsive to the growing needs of our customers.

Is there anything new or exciting happening in the security industry?

What I am most excited about is the move towards evolved video systems. New software technology integrates with the existing wired security equipment and still provides the customer with the solution they expect. We are also seeing more vendors integrate the AI benefits into their video solutions without upgrading the physical cameras. I love this because it allows anyone to take the AI leap without the high initial cost.

What are the biggest advantages for customers who choose EPS Security?

Why EPS? That one is easy. We are here. We live in the same communities you do. All our services are centered in Grand Rapids, MI, and our other four Michigan regional offices. When you have an emergency in the middle of the night, you want the person responding to be someone you can understand and who is local. When you have an emergency, you don’t want to deal with anyone outside the country.

Now for the DIY crowd… You get what you pay for. These systems are often meant for people who know how to manage a WiFi network, create logic processes for smart home integrations, and want to have a continuous hobby with their system. If you want a system to work without thinking about it, then EPS can help!

If someone’s on the fence about security, what would you say to help them make the decision?

There is a reason you started to think about adding a security system. If the reason is to protect an investment (your business, home, or prized possessions), consider if the system will help you sleep at night or help you manage that investment. If you need to protect your family, employees, guests, customers, or loved ones, know this… Everything we do here at EPS puts people, our customers, first. It is that Personal Touch that allows us to rise above our competitors.
