Why a DIY security system isn’t the best option for your business

There are a few things in life where the DIY (do-it-yourself) option is a fantastic choice, like cooking dinner, doing basic repairs or filing taxes. However, there are certain things, like security systems for your business, where DIY might not be the best option.

DIY security systems do seem to have a few things going for them – they can be cheaper up front, relatively easy to install and work well enough. And while some arguments can be made in their favor, they might not be the best security option for many businesses.

Don’t believe us? Read on…

Argument #1 – DIY systems are cheaper.

While up-front, it might be cheaper to simply go to the store and pick up a DIY alarm kit, or a few cameras, locks and sensors. In the long-run, it can potentially end up costing your business a lot more than a professionally installed security system might.

How will you end up paying more in the long-run? Let’s say that your system malfunctions, doesn’t provide enough coverage, or doesn’t alert the authorities in a timely fashion. If an incident occurs, you could end up paying a large sum of money to replace damaged or stolen inventory or repair building damage.

In more extreme cases you could end up paying with the reputation of your business if an incident causes you to lose employees or customers.

Professionally installed security systems might not be as expensive as you might think. Many providers will work with you to figure out the most cost-effective and budget friendly way to secure and monitor your business.

Argument #2 – The components are easy to install and maintain.

There is a common misconception that all you need to do to install an effective security system is hook up a few cameras and sensors and you’re good to go. But creating a truly effective system takes a lot of research, technical know-how and time (which is something quite precious to small business owners.) Save yourself some time and have the professionals install your security system. They will take care of everything, and you can spend your time on other aspects of your business.

Now let’s talk a little bit about system maintenance. Once the system is running, it’s fairly unavoidable that components will need repair or upgrades. If you install your own system, it will be up to you to fix or replace any broken or outdated parts, taking up even more of your time. But with a professional install, most system providers offer continued maintenance and assistance and stay up on the latest products, technology, and trends so you don’t have to do the research.

Argument #3 – DIY systems work well enough.

You want the best for your business, so why settle for a security system that only works well enough? As mentioned, when you install your own security system, you’re solely responsible for maintaining the system; and the responsibility doesn’t just end there. You (or your employees) are also responsible for monitoring it 24/7/365 and alerting the authorities in the event of an emergency.

What if you don’t receive any notification at all or receive a false alarm? The chances of this happening increase drastically if your DIY system wasn’t properly configured when you installed it.

Not only will a professional installer make sure your equipment is configured correctly, they walk you and your employees through the system, train you on how it works, and what exactly happens when an alarm is triggered. Usually, when an alarm is sounded, the provider’s monitoring center is notified and trained responders notify the proper authorities.

Professional experience means that the system is working as well as it can be, not just well enough.
