EPS Security’s Kirk B., Senior Project Specialist
At EPS Security, our skilled security technicians are the backbone of our success. For Security Technician Day, we had the pleasure of interviewing one of our own to share his journey, experience, and advice for anyone considering the industry.
Kirk has been with EPS Security for more than 35 years. He is a Senior Project Specialist, and certified NICET Fire Alarm Systems Level II. Here is what he had to say about his career at EPS Security.
How did your career as a security technician begin at EPS Security?
“After high school, I worked in construction and always had an interest in electronics. I attended a tech school for two years, and through their job placement program, I found out that EPS Security was hiring. That’s how it all began.”
What skills have you developed during your time with EPS Security, and how has the company supported your professional growth?
“I’ve worked on both residential and commercial job sites, where I’ve honed skills like fishing and tracking wires. Working on various projects has also helped me develop strong communication skills, which are crucial for collaboration.”
What advice would you give to someone considering a career as a security technician?
“Learn trade skills like drafting and blueprint reading. It’s important to understand how things are put together. And don’t forget electronic troubleshooting skills—they’re key for solving device issues.”
How has the technology in security systems evolved since you started your career, and how has that impacted your work?
“Security has evolved a lot into the IT world in recent years. It used to be a stand-alone business, but now technology integration plays a huge role.”
What’s the most challenging or rewarding installation or service project you’ve worked on, and why?
“The most challenging projects are the very large ones—they can feel overwhelming. But the most rewarding part is seeing those projects through, knowing the job was done right, and making our clients happy. It’s also amazing to work with fellow EPS Security employees who contribute to the project’s success.”
What’s one misconception about security or alarm systems you think customers should know?
“A lot of people tend to forget about security when planning projects and wait until the last minute to call us. Sometimes they only hear about it from their insurance agents. By that time, the window for a seamless install closes, making it more difficult and expensive.”
As we celebrate Security Technician Day, we want to extend our deepest gratitude to all our technicians for their hard work and dedication. Their expertise keeps our communities safe and secure every day.
