Life safety: Five quick tips for pool safety and security

There’s nothing better on a hot summer day than lounging around the pool, drinking lemonade, and letting the kids swim like fish all afternoon. However, it’s easy to worry about your child’s safety around the water. An accident can happen in an instant. Take a moment to ensure your family’s fun in the sun is done safely.

Five Quick Pool Safety Tips

Swimming Lessons: The first step to swimming safety is knowing how to swim! It is never too late to learn how to swim either. Check for organizations offering instructional courses in your area and sign your child, or yourself up for the age appropriate class.

Fence it in: The best way to keep your children, especially the little ones, from accidentally falling into your pool is to put a fence around it. It is suggested that your fence be at least 4 feet high with a gate that closes and locks on its own.

Keep Safety Equipment Close By: No matter how much we try to prevent our children from getting hurt, they are simply prone to accidents. It is always smart to keep a first-aid kit, life jackets, and other rescue equipment near the pool. It would also be a wise decision to certify in CPR; in case of emergencies, the technique and training could be life-saving.

Store Chemicals Safely: It’s important to test and adjust your pool’s chemical levels regularly. It is also important to store those chemicals in a cool, dry spot, away from sunlight. Ensure the storage is locked and out of a child’s reach. Consider displaying warning signage where any dangerous pool chemicals may be stored. Lastly, educate family members of pool chemical exposure danger and what to do if an accident occurs.

Active Supervision: Always designate an adult to watch the children playing in the pool, even if a lifeguard is present. It is also suggested by the Red Cross that you keep small children within arm’s reach at all times. Know the warning signs of struggling and/or drowning. Avoid putting yourself in situations where children are swimming without supervision or at a distance too far for quick assistance. While it seems like common sense, it’s easy to become distracted on a beautiful sunny day of pool fun.
