If your organization is moving to a new space, it can be an exciting, but also very stressful time. There are so many things to keep track of such as; securing permits, moving equipment, the list goes on and on. One thing that might not be top of mind, but ought to be – security.

Organize the moving chaos.

When you are moving there can be a steady stream of people coming and going from both your new space and your current one. Contractors, movers, delivery people (not to mention employees) may all be in out of a space on any given day.

If handled improperly, all of this activity can pose a number safety and security issues:

  • doors left open or unlocked
  • people in places they should not have access to
  • theft or property damage

Luckily, there are a few simple things that you can do to mitigate these potential problems:

  • Make sure someone is managing the move and is on hand to supervise any contractors, movers, inspectors or delivery people. Have someone that you trust there to disarm the security system and unlock the doors to let visitors in. They can also keep an eye out for any suspicious behavior and show visitors out, locking up and setting alarms as they leave. This is especially important if you don’t have the ability to control your security system or view video surveillance feed remotely.
  • When you are moving things can get a bit hectic. If you are packing or unpacking, there might be boxes with valuable items in them left in different places. Or if there is construction being done on your space, there might be valuable equipment; that if left somewhere unlocked or unattended is a target for burglars. Be diligent and ensure that valuable items are locked up and out of sight.

Optimize the security of your new building.

Moving to a new space is the perfect time to re-evaluate your security needs and ask a lot of important questions, like:

  • Are you able to move your current security system to new location? If so, do you want to keep everything the same or are there aspects that you would like to change? If not, what will you do to keep your new space safe and secure?
  • Do you even want to move old system at all? Perhaps it doesn’t really meet your needs anymore or you know it will be a large (and unwanted) expense to move the system.
  • Or do you want to get a new system and a new provider that better meets your security needs?
